If you keep up with my posts on this blog, then you may be aware of my disdain for a certain company owned by one of the largest plastic waste contributors in the world. Love, Beauty, and Planet is a brand owned by Unilever, a company that owns close to 200 brands, most of which are packaged in plastic. Unilever created Love, Beauty, and Planet as a way to elevate their image when it came to the environment, and I would say that they were mostly successful, except for the fact that a lot of us in the zero waste movement aren’t buying it.
Love, Beauty, and Planet started out with shampoos and conditioners sold in plastic bottles, but they are at least made with recycled plastic. However, when you learn that plastic cannot be recycled forever and eventually does end up in landfill, you realize that recycled plastic more postpones the problem rather than actually solving it. This also doesn’t help if your consumers don’t also recycle their bottles of shampoo or conditioner, which I would bet 99% don’t.
Much more recently however, I would say that Love, Beauty, and Planet have actually made an attempt to actually be a sustainable brand instead of just greenwashing. They came out with some shampoo bars, which if you didn’t know, require no plastic packaging and actually allows you to not waste as much product compared to liquid shampoos. Since I have already been one to try out other brands shampoo bars, I decided I could put Love, Beauty, and Planet’s bar to a real test.
From what I’ve discerned, you can only by the shampoo bars in-store at Target, and they are reasonably priced at only $4.99, which is an amazing price considering that a lot of the other bars that I have tried are over $10. When I went, only their rose and murumuru butter bar was in stock, but they also have a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner bar that is coconut water and mimosa flower scented. I bought the rose one and was pleasantly surprised at the packaging.
The bar comes in a cardboard box and zero plastic. I was fully expecting the bar to have a plastic wrapping around it for no real reason, like I’ve seen with some other brands, but there was none to be found. Also, the bar is massive compared to what I’m used to, so I really hoped that it would work with my hair because of the sheer amount of product that was there.
Using the Bar
I had super high hopes for this bar, but I just don’t think that it was meant to be.
At school, I have hard water, and there are just some shampoo bars that don’t work in hard water and leave residue all over your hair. This bar wasn’t terrible, but I could just feel the extra product that didn’t get rinsed out completely and made my hair super waxy. You might think that maybe I didn’t wash out the product completely, but I always follow the same protocol when I’m trying out new bars:
- Swipe over the hair three times
- Lather it up
- Rinse well for 5 minutes
If that product isn’t completely out of my hair after rinsing for 5 minutes, then the formula just doesn’t work well with hard water. This is a huge hurdle that I’ve found with a lot of bars, but the best ones that I’ve ever tried work in both hard and soft water, making them super versatile and great for just about everyone.
This bar was only $5, so I wasn’t expecting an amazing experience, but my Body & Earth shampoo bar from Walmart is barely $4 and performs better (and in both hard and soft water).
I bought this bar in September and have been holding off on posting this just because I want to give it a fair shake. I am going to hold onto this bar and try it out again when I go home for the winter, just because I want to see if it performs better in soft water. I really want this bar to work well since I know that it is so accessible to so many people. However, I feel like it is important for me to post this now and just do an update after trying it later when I am back home for winter break, so stay tuned for that coming in December!
