Most of my rants on this blog seem to do pretty well. I’ve talked about why I hate how every platform is coming out with their own streaming services in the past and why I hate most subscription-based products. I realized that since my main focus on this channel is sustainability and being zero waste that it might be interesting to talk about the things I don’t like about the movement and some zero waste swaps that I just can’t get behind. For my first rant, I thought I would rehash something that I’ve talked about multiple times in passing on this blog and the one thing I see pop up everywhere whenever you look for some zero waste swaps, and that is reusable face/cotton rounds.
I think anybody who wears makeup believes that they have to have cotton rounds, cotton balls, or makeup wipes in order to take off their makeup. A lot of people just take the round, dab it with makeup remover, and go to town. I used to be one of those people, and admittedly I probably used around five or so rounds to take off my makeup because I thought that the round was way too dirty to be able to get off anymore makeup than a few swipes. I’m sure that a lot of people still think this way just like I did. But I’m here to tell you that you really don’t need all of that.
I can see why people believe that they need to have these reusable cotton rounds in their life when they switch to zero waste because whenever you search zero waste swaps on almost any shopping service (Amazon, Etsy, EarthHero, etc.) they pop up. I think subconsciously we all think that since it is such a popular swap and it is one of the most common things that pops up next to metal straws (more on those in another rant) that we have to have that thing and that we will use it more because it is sustainable. In all actuality, they are so common because they are so easy to make and markup for profits.
In my experience, it is better to have reusable swaps that can serve more than one purpose in your life. For example, glass jars can be used to store food and also be used as drinkware. In that regard, I truly believe that the better swap for cotton and face rounds is something that everyone already has in their home. Washcloths.
Washcloths serve so many more purposes in your life. Not only can you use it to remove makeup, it can be used to wash your face and body and as a cleaning rag around the house. You don’t have to go out and buy a new ting just to remove your makeup like so many people do when they get the reusable cotton rounds because I know that people have more washcloths than they probably use in their house right now.
The worst thing I can think of when it comes to going zero waste, is buying a more sustainable swap and then not using them. I’ve seen so many people in this community buy the reusable cotton rounds as one of their first purchases when going zero waste, and then they end up not even using them, or not using them enough to have justified their purchase of them in the first place. This is why I don’t really endorse them on my blog and why I mostly recommend trying to switch up your routine by trying to use a washcloth for the same job as your cotton rounds. The best swaps are the ones that you don’t have to go out and buy because you save money and you use what you already have at your disposal.
So what do you think about the reusable cotton rounds? Are they worth it?
