Health Benefits of Drinking Black Tea

When it comes to being a tea drinker, I am not really big into green tea, fruit flavored tea, or tea’s flavored to taste like your favorite confectionary sweet. As a child, whenever I was sick with a sore throat, my mother always made Lipton tea with added honey to soothe my throat. To me, any other kind of tea other than black tea just tastes bad. I don’t know if that gives me bias when writing this post, but the claims I am making are backed by studies and science, so do with this information what you will.

I recently got on the kick of drinking black tea when starting my zero waste journey because I realized just how wasteful and unhealthy pop (or soda if you’re not from the Midwest) is. The downside of just giving up pop for water and milk, is that caffeine headaches don’t like you quitting cold turkey. I decided that black tea was a good alternative for me to quell those headaches in a healthier manner, and in doing so, I wanted to see just how much healthier black tea was if at all. My research brought me to these 8 benefits to drinking black tea.

1 – Improved Oral Health

Black tea contain polyphenols which have been shown to reduces the formation of plaque in the mouth. Plaque contains bacteria, which produce acids that attack your tooth enamel and can damage your gums, and these polyphenols help you with reducing plaque along with brushing and flossing. These polyphenols are also known to restrict the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, leading to a healthier mouth.

2 – Full of Antioxidants

Black tea contains antioxidants called flavonoids. Thearubigins, epicatechins, and catechins are among those listed. These antioxidants are not found in fruits and vegetables and some are known to help block the DNA damage caused by harsh chemicals.

3 – Healthier Bones

Black tea also contains phytochemicals which are known to help your bones be stronger and less brittle. Habitual tea drinking has also been shown to reduce risk of osteoporosis later in life.

4 – Stress Relief

Black tea has the amino acid L-theanine which has many stress relieving benefits. L-theanine is known to aid in better sleep, relaxation, better mental focus, reducing blood pressure, and reducing the stress hormone cortisol.

5 – Better Immune System

Black tea also contains alkylamine antigens known to boost the immune response. Tea also contains tannins which help give your body a boost in fighting off viruses.

6 – Better Digestion

The tannins in black tea are also known to have positive effects on gastric and intestinal illnesses and decrease your overall digestive activity.

7 – Energizing

Black tea has very low amount of caffeine that enhance blood flow to the brain while not affecting the heart as heavily. This helps stimulate your metabolism and respiratory system and also helps you focus more and give you more energy to get through the day.

8 – Heart Health

Just like before, the flavonoids in black tea have been show to reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease and high blood pressure.
