The Best Ways to Survive Finals

Right now it’s one of the most stressful times of the year. It comes with the rise of energy drinks sales in college towns and the deadness in the air of all students silently giving up at the same time. If this is your first time studying for college finals, or maybe you’ve been around the block a few times, here are a few tips to help make your finals a little less painful.

1. Eat Healthy

Finals week is the time of year where most students eat the most unhealthy. They either eat a bunch of junk food, or don’t eat as much as they should due to stress and poor time management. Make sure that you’re getting the right foods at the right times in order to continue feeling your best during finals.  Junk food may give you a feeling of instant energy, but it will damage your concentration and memory. Eating healthy food will increases concentration and retention for all those facts and vocabulary words you need to remember. Simply eating healthy is an easy way to help manage stress and get good grades during your finals.

2. Sleep

Another simple one that gets taken for granted during finals time. Sleep is important fuel for your body. Without adequate sleep, your brain can’t focus or retain anything that you are trying to learn or relearn before your exams. Sleeping will limit your study time, but it will also make it more meaningful because you will be able to remember more.

3. Pick the Right Study Environment

Studying in your own room can be the worst idea during finals week, especially studying in your bed. When you are in your room, it is way easier to succumb to temptations like Netflix and Disney+. This may be the only time that going to the library is essential to your academic success. Pick anywhere you know you will be able to focus on studying and nothing else.

4. Lists

Lists are your best friend during finals, especially if you are juggling between final exams and final projects. Lists are also great psychologically. Studies show that the act of crossing something off a list boosts your mood and helps relieve stress. Make a list of all your projects and studying that you need to get done, break it down by chapters if you want. Then, as you go down the list, you will feel great and have a better grip on what needs to be done.

5. Stay Hydrated

Your water bottle is your friend during finals. Your brain works best when properly hydrated. Dehydration can lead to problems focusing, fatigue, and headaches, which are no fun to study with. It may be tempting to down all the energy drinks that you can find, but if you are already getting enough sleep, then it should be easy to stay hydrated and maximize that study time.

6. Take Breaks

Another big mistake that people make is trying to study everything at once, but your brain actually works better if you give it time to soak up the information you are feeding it. 15-20 minute breaks of doing something else can help you retain more.
