Why Bargain Brands are My Go-To’s

So it’s no secret that I do most of my shopping at Walmart, whether it be online or in-store. Living in the Midwest, Walmart is everywhere. And even though it has been classified as Target’s trashy sister, I find it to be a great place for me to shop.

If you haven’t already figured it out from my many other posts, I am a college student (I think I say that in about everything I’ve written, so I’m sorry about being redundant,) and I am definitely the stereotypical “broke” college student, although I am taking steps to change that. Whenever and wherever I can find a good deal on something that I absolutely need, you bet your butt I’m happy about it. One of the ways I save the most money is shopping bargain brands instead of the “higher quality” ones.

I put “higher quality” in quotation marks because, well, I’m not sure that that is truly the case. Perhaps we only perceive them as such because of the hefty price tag that comes with them. Are they really that different from the similarly shaped bottle of product next to it on the shelf for a lower price? Am I just paying for the name that comes on the label?

They are questions that make you think.

Bargain brands seem to have a negative stigma around them. They’re cheap and diluted so they won’t work as well. Or they’ll make you break out because they don’t use the same quality ingredients as the other guys.

Brands like Equate Beauty have figure this out and have been giving their products a face lift. For instance, I’ve talked before about an Equate Beauty product that I use everyday, their African black soap washNow I’m being completely honest with you when I say that when I picked this product off of the shelf, I had no idea it was a bargain brand at all. To be honest, the colorful label and zebras caught my attention, and I was interested in African black soap because I had never heard of it before. The price was low so I thought that I would give it a try. It wasn’t until I had bought it and brought it home that I noticed that it was Equate Beauty brand.

If you look, you can see the Equate Beauty logo, but the rest of the design on the bottle and faint lettering made it almost invisible to me. Now I wasn’t mad when I discovered that it was Equate Beauty at all. The price was right for the product and I was happy to buy a less than $5 bottle of face wash compared to the others priced at about $10. As an advertising student, I was impressed by the label and the kind of “trick” that Equate Beauty had pulled on me. After using the African black soap, I was honestly impressed by the quality. It did what it said it would on the bottle, moisturize and clean. My skin felt soft, and it help keep my face free of breakouts.

The main problem I’ve found with this soap is that once I did find it, Walmart and Equate decided to no longer make it. I then spent around a year looking for a suitable replacement. And boy do I hope that they don’t discontinue this one.

Harry’s is a fairly newer brand that has affordable men’s skin care and razors. Although I personally use them myself as a woman (down with the pink tax!). This bottle is barely $7 and last you a long time. I use it every night in the shower and you only need to use the tiniest amount to get your entire face washed and exfoliated. Their razors are amazing too. You can get the handle and two razors for $10 and then packs of razors that come out to be about $2 per razor, which is way cheaper than most brands.

Since my pleasant surprise from Equate Beauty, I’ve given more and more bargain brands a chance, and my bank account has thanked me. While I don’t often shop for new products, I’ve been trying to sub out some of my more expensive beauty and health purchases with bargain brands.

I’ve learned in the past couple years that every penny counts, and brand like Equate Beauty and Harry’s have given quality without taking my wallet.
